WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team started A-10 play with a bang on Friday, sweeping St. Bonaventure in a pair of run-rule wins at the GW Softball Field. The Revolutionaries swept their A-10 opening doubleheader for the first time since 2022 as they improved to 15-8 overall.
GW 14, St. Bonaventure 0 (5 Innings)
GW's offensive eruption continued after beating Morgan State 18-2 on Wednesday. A 10-run fourth was more than enough for the Revolutionaries as they clinched a 14-0 win in five innings in the series opener.
GW hit the ground running, bumping the lead to 1-0 in the first and 4-0 in the third. The Buff & Blue sent 16 batters to the plate in their 10-run fourth inning by way of a combined seven walks/batters hit by pitches and four hits, helped by a pair of St. Bonaventure errors.Â
The Revolutionaries' approach of getting on base by any means worked like a well-oiled machine, as GW put the game out of reach quickly on eight hits and 10 walks in just four offensive half-innings. The Buff & Blue had just one extra-base hit but passed the baton excellently down the order.
Cece Smith limited the Bonnies to just two hits as she dominated her way through the batting order. Smith had eight strikeouts in a complete-game shutout win as she earned her team-best sixth win of the season.
Madi Mays had a season-high five RBI with three of GW's eight hits. Lilly Travieso, Carolyn Skotz and Paige Hayward each supported the cause with two RBI apiece. Ashley Corpuz didn't record an official at-bat, as the power-hitter was walked in all four of her plate appearances.
GW 10, St. Bonaventure 2 (5 Innings)
GW didn't miss a beat between games and pounced again on St. Bonaventure, 10-2, in another five-inning win.
GW built its lead quickly in game two with four runs in both the first and third, and aided by a Heffley solo home run in the second, the Revolutionaries found themselves with a 9-2 lead after three frames. An Emi Todoroki RBI groundout in the fourth gave the GW its eight-run cushion required to end the game in five.
Heffley (2-2, BB), Hayward (3-3) and Cadence Gilliland (2-2) each had spotless games at the plate. Heffley's home run highlighted a game with more power in the Buff & Blue's bats, as Layfield, Hayward and Gilliland each added doubles to their season totals.
A batch of walks and a pair of runs weren't ideal for GW starting pitcher Sophia Torreso, but the sophomore settled in and closed with a quality outing, going 4.0 innings and allowing just two hits and two runs.
Anna Reed made her first appearance of the weekend to shut the door on St. Bonaventure in the fifth, as GW was trying to hold its 10-2 lead to finish the sweep in five innings. Reed punched out two of her three batters to slam the door on Friday's games.
