ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Thanks to a stifling defensive effort, GW men's basketball pulled out a tremendous road victory, walking away with a double-digit triumph at St. Bonaventure, 62-52, on Sunday afternoon.
The 10-point margin of victory for the Buff & Blue marks the largest road A-10 win for George Washington since a 97-87 triumph at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 31, 2022. The win was GW's 16th of the year and fifth in A-10 play, both surpassing last year's total with seven regular season games remaining.
GW's defense was all over the court, limiting a second-straight foe to less than 55 points, the first time doing so in consecutive games since the first two games of the 2014-15 campaign. St. Bonaventure was held to its second-lowest field goal percentage of the year (37.5%) and saw just two of their five players who average double digits reach 10 points.
The Buff & Blue faced a four-point deficit, 39-35, with 12 minutes remaining, but held the Bonnies without a point for the next six minutes while scoring 10 in a row on its own, punctuated by a dunk from Rafael Castro to put GW ahead, 45-39.
Another dunk from Castro with GW leading by four and less than three minutes left sparked a 7-0 burst that pushed the lead to its largest of the day at 58-47. The Revolutionaries then made all of their free throws in the final minute to salt away a third-straight triumph over St. Bonaventure and earn consecutive wins in the Reilly Center for the first time since 2005-10.
Castro tallied his 10th double-double of the season, and third in the last four games, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Autry matched Castro with 15 points, including a pair of critical threes down the stretch. Darren Buchanan Jr. scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and three assists to give GW three in double digits.
Next up for the Buff & Blue is a home date with VCU on Wednesday night at the Smith Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with streaming coverage exclusively on Peacock.
