Clinton, S.C. - The 2025 regular season kicked off today for the George Washington University softball team as the Revolutionaries played to a 1-1 record on Opening Day. The Buff & Blue poured nine runs on Morehead State in a four-run game one victory, before being bested by the Norse from Northern Kentucky, 5-2, in a nine-inning marathon.Â
GW 9, Morehead State 5
GW, playing as the visitors against Morehead State in the first game of Opening Day action at the Blue Hose Invitational, led wire-to-wire against the Eagles for a 9-5 win.
A barrage on the basepaths in the first saw Kaylee Layfield, Allison Heffley and Ashley Corpuz score. Keeping the pressure applied, GW added a fourth run in the second as a Heffley single drove in Cadence Gilliland, but the Eagles evened the frame with an unearned run in the bottom of the second. After a scoreless third, GW blew open the game in the fourth and fifth, scoring its last five runs by way of two swings - a Madi Mays two-RBI single in the fourth, and an Ashley Corpuz bases-clearing double in the fifth that scored three.
Morehead State closed the gap with one run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but was held to five runs in the game by GW pitchers Anna Reed and Chloe Greene. Reed made the start and earned the win with 6.0 IP, allowing just two earned runs with five Ks. Greene handled the seventh inning and struck out two. Heffley led the offensive efforts, going 3-3 with two RBI, two runs and one walk.Â
It took nine innings for game two between GW and NKU to be decided, but a 2-0 start wasn't to be for the Revolutionaries as the Norse scored three in the ninth to claim victory.Â
A scoreless battle ensued for the first three innings between GW's Cece Smith and NKU's Brooklyn Ballis. The first score came in the fourth inning as Emi Todoroki slapped a single down the right-field line, scoring Lily Travieso. The Norse took the lead in the sixth inning after plating two runs, but the Revolutionaries answered in the last of the seventh to force extras, which held scoreless until the Norse's big ninth.Â
Smith struck out five in her first start of 2025 and held NKU to four hits and two runs for 6.0 innings. Todoroki had a 3-4 afternoon with one RBI, while Skotz drove in GW's second run on her seventh-inning sac-fly.Â
