2/7/2025 2:33:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball hits the road for a Super Sunday matchup in Western New York as it battles St. Bonaventure at 12 p.m. Live coverage will be available nationally on USA Network.
DEFENSE REACHING NEW LEVELS
GW is enjoying its best defensive season in a decade, allowing its fewest ppg since 2014-15 (62.0) and ranking inside KenPom's top-100 defensively (97th) for the first time since that same year (65th). The GW Revs are currently fifth in the A-10, and 62nd nationally, limiting foes to 67.5 ppg.
GW is 50th in the country in field goal defense (40.9%) and 36th nationally in 3-point defense (30.1%), both top-four in the A-10. GW has held its opponent to fewer than 70 points 14 times this year after doing so just 17 times combined in the first two years under Coach Caputo.
TAKING THE REINS
Christian Jones has taken his game to another level since moving into the starting lineup on Jan. 4 vs. Dayton, averaging 11.5 ppg, 4.3 apg and 2.2 spg during the last nine games. Jones scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half against George Mason and is the team's third-leading scorer during A-10 games at 10.9 ppg.
He also paces the squad in assists (40) and steals (20) during league play. Jones is one of just two players in the league (Sebastian Thomas, URI) with 40+ assists and 20+ steals vs. A-10 foes. Nationally, Jones is one of just 13 freshmen nationally averaging 2.5 apg and 1.5 spg and is currently on pace to be the first first-year to post those averages at GW since Terry Nolan, Jr. in 2017-18.
HISTORY VS. ST. BONAVENTURE
Sunday marks the 68th matchup between GW and St. Bonaventure, with the Buff & Blue holding a 37-30 edge in the all-time series. GW has won back-to-back games over the Bonnies, an 86-75 victory at the Smith Center last season, and an 83-81 overtime triumph two years ago when James Bishop IV made three free throws with two seconds left to win the game.
The Buff & Blue are 11-18 all-time at St. Bonaventure and are looking for back-to-back wins at the Reilly Center for the first time since winning four-straight from 2005-10. Overall, GW is looking to win three-straight games vs. St. Bonaventure for the first time since posting three-consecutive victories from 2013-15.
A LOOK AT THE BONNIES
St. Bonaventure enters play on Sunday at 5-6 in conference play as the lone team yet to have a bye in league play. The Bonnies rely heavily on their starting five, ranking 363rd in the country (out of 364 teams) in bench minutes. All five average double digits in conference play and four of the five do overall, led by Melvin Council Jr. at 14.4 ppg. Chance Moore averages 13.6 ppg and former GW Revolutionary Noel Brown has had a career year with 12.4 ppg and 5.5 rpg.
During league play, St. Bonaventure has had the second-most efficient offense at 1.083 ppp, but is 13th in the league in defensive efficiency, allowing 1.104 ppp. The Bonnies have yielded the fourth most 3-point attempts in the country and have seen teams score 42% of their points against from beyond the arc. Conversely, St. Bonaventure has committed the seventh-fewest fouls in the nation and allowed the fewest points from the charity stripe among A-10 teams.
