WASHINGTON - GW redshirt senior center Rafael Castro has earned his first career A-10 weekly honor, being tabbed the league's Co-Player of the Week on Monday.
Castro dominated in GW's pair of blowout victories over American and Old Dominion, averaging 17.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.5 apg and 2.5 spg while shooting 77% from the floor and only playing 21.2 mpg. He also posted a sterling 5:1 assist-to-turnover ratio from his center position.
He opened the week with a 15-point effort vs. American, adding eight rebounds with a career-high five assists and a pair of steals. Saturday vs. ODU was his best game of the year to date, making all six field goals en route to his first 20-point game of the year, adding nine rebounds and three steals.
Since battling foul trouble in the season opener, Castro has showcased his Player of the Year caliber form, posting double figures in three straight and averaging 16.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 2.3 apg and 2.3 spg.
For the season, Castro is one of just four players nationally averaging at least 14 points per game while playing less than 19 minutes per contest.
