WASHINGTON – Riding two-straight victories, the George Washington women's basketball team welcomes Loyola Chicago to the Smith Center for an A-10 matinee clash on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
MOTT REACHES CAREER MILESTONE
Last Sunday, the Revolutionaries picked up their first Atlantic 10 victory of the season, topping La Salle, 65-54. Graduate Paige Mott was phenomenal in the performance, posting an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double in front of her hometown Philly crowd, her second double-double in as many games. Her 18 points set a new GW career-high but was not the highlight of her performance. Her fourth rebound of the day gave her 500 career boards, a feat that took 125 games to accomplish. Mott spent the first four years (113 games) of her collegiate career with Northwestern, where she recorded 431 rebounds. In her final collegiate season with GW, Mott has pulled down 75 boards, a 6.3 rebound per game average, which is a career-best thus far and puts her on pace to also eclipse 600 carroms by the end of the regular season.
DEFENSE IS KING
One thing that has stayed consistent during head coach Caroline McCombs' tenure is the defensive prowess that characterizes the Buff & Blue. Through a 13-game sample size this season, defense has helped guide the program to its 8-5 overall mark. GW is 4-0 in games where the opposition is held under 50 points and 2-1 in contests where they're held under 60. A combined 6-1, accounting for 75% of the team's wins, have been earned when keeping opponents in the 50's and below. Part of this defensive success is attributable to the team's effective rebounding this season. GW leads the Atlantic 10 in team rebounds per game (43.5 – 18th nationally), rebound margin (+10.2 – 19th nationally) and team defensive rebounds per game (29.2 – 23rd nationally). The ability to limit opposing offenses to just one chance per possession is a key contributing factor to the team's eight wins thus far.
SCOUTING THE RAMBLERS
Loyola Chicago, who enters the game 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the A-10, suffered an 83-45 beatdown at the hands of Dayton on Thursday night. The Flyers shot a stellar 61.2% from the field in the contest and connected on 47.4% of its three-pointers. The Ramblers' lone conference win of the year came last Sunday against St. Bonaventure, downing the Bonnies, 57-40, in the Windy City. Similar to GW, Loyola Chicago was also scheduled for an early A-10 game at the beginning of December. In their conference opener, the Ramblers fell to La Salle on that day, 55-45, for the team's first conference loss of the season.
Led by third-year head coach Allison Guth, Loyola Chicago's offense is guided by Naelle Bernard who averages 10.9 points a night. She's the lone Rambler who averages double figures and shoots the ball at a 42.7% clip from the floor. Jess Finney puts in 6.8 ppg and pulls down 3.1 boards, while Emma Theodorsson is averaging 8.9 points and a team-best 4.8 rebounds per game.
