WASHINGTON - The Saint Louis Billikens and its top-three standing in the A-10 traveled to George Washington on Saturday for a clash with the Revolutionaries, with GW looking to snap out of a mini-swoon. In a near wire-to-wire win for the home team, the GW Revs hung on for a 67-61 win, putting the game away at the line in the closing seconds.
SLU got the game started with the first bucket of the contest, but a short-lived :15 lead was the only time it would have the advantage for the rest of the game. Despite closing to within three with 38 seconds to play and having a chance to tie with :11 on the clock, Saint Louis was held at bay by a trio of GW free throws to put the game away.
Rafael Castro was a monster again Saturday, out-dueling the more heralded Robbie Avila from start to finish. Castro finished with game-highs of 21 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, none bigger than a rejection at the rim with 55 ticks left. His final points came at the stripe, making the narrow four-point game a two-possession gap with three seconds to go.
Christian Jones also left as the talk of the crowd, battling against Saint Louis' top backcourt tandem in Gibson Jimerson and Isaiah Swope. Avila, Jimerson and Swope were the only trio of teammates all averaging 17+ points per game, and none hit the mark Saturday. Jones, however, in another bid for A-10 All-Rookie honors, had 16 points and a game-high tying four assists, while pacing all players with a +8 plus-minus tally in his 27:56 on the floor.
Now back in the win column and with health and momentum on its side, GW has payback on its mind with Richmond next on the docket. The Spiders defeated George Washington in Virginia on Dec. 31, but this time on Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Buff & Blue will look to settle the score.
