WASHINGTON – Following a canceled match against Bucknell and a trip to Youngstown State last week, the George Washington women's soccer team returns to the DMV for two more non-conference matchups. The Buff & Blue first travel north of campus to Howard for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, then host Drexel on Sunday for the program's Alumni Day. Sunday's matchup with the Dragons is set for 1:00 p.m. with an alumni tailgate scheduled to kick off the action at The Vern at noon. Thursday's match will be live on NEC Front Row, while Sunday's home matchup will be aired on ESPN+.
ADDED MATCH WITH THE WOLFPACK
After having last week's match against Bucknell canceled due to inclement weather, GW has added a contest against NC State on Sunday, Sept. 15. The match is set for noon at Dell Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
GW and the Bison had completed 34 minutes of action last Thursday before lightning in the area forced the game to be called. In a similar situation, NC State had its Sept. 1 match against Colorado axed due to ongoing inclement weather in the Raleigh area. The match comes during GW's "off-week" which was a built-in buffer between the end of non-conference action and the beginning of Atlantic 10 play on Sept. 19 against St. Bonaventure. Broadcast information for the match against the Wolfpack will be announced at a later date.
SCOUTING THE BISON
Howard enters the week 1-2-2 overall and winless in its last four matches after falling to UMBC 2-0 last Sunday. The Bison are riding a two-game losing skid which includes the loss to the Terriers, as well as a 1-0 defeat to Richmond on Aug. 25. Prior to those contests, Howard posted a pair of draws, the first a scoreless bout with Hampton on Aug. 18, then a 1-1 stalemate with George Mason on Aug 22. The team's lone win of the season came during its season-opener, a 4-2 victory over Saint Peter's on Aug. 15.
Leading the program in his 16th season at the helm is Brent Leiba, who's guided the Bison to two NCAA Tournament appearances, three regular season conference titles and three conference tournament crowns. Howard's most recent hardware was earned during the 2019 season, winning a share of the SWAC regular season championship and advancing to the conference's tournament title match. Now as a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) since the 2021 season, Howard made its first appearance in the conference tournament last year, posting a 12-6-2 record overall. Leiba holds a 122-123-23 record during his time as head coach and a 1-3-1 mark against the Buff & Blue.
Leading the Bison statistically this season is Mimi Richards, who's tallied three of the team's four goals on the year. Richards has six total points and leads the squad with 12 shots on goal. Melea Earley is the team's lone goal scorer aside from Richards, posting one goal for two points this season. She also has 13 shot attempts on the year, placing seven on target. Gabriella Garcia-Terrell and Zoe Moore have each recorded an assist on the season, while Garcia-Terrell leads the team with 16 total shots.
Four different keepers have shared time in net for the Bison this season, headlined by Nya-Grace Young who has started in two matches. Young has played 180 minutes in 2024, allowing two goals and recording seven saves. Hailey Ayers is next in line with 135 minutes on the season. Ayers has one goal allowed, one save and is the only keeper to record a win for the Bison this year. Trinity Knox has 90 minutes of work to go along with her four saves, while Laila Cowsette has one save in 45 minutes of action.
SCOUTING THE DRAGONS
The Dragons will arrive in the DMV on Sunday well rested after having what will be seven days off before facing the Revolutionaries. Drexel, who hasn't faced GW since the 2015 season, last played on Sept. 1 against Lehigh. That match ended in a 4-4 draw, a high-scoring affair that saw Drexel come back from an early 4-0 hole and tally the equalizer in the 86th minute. Drexel holds a 1-2-1 record on the season with its lone win coming on Aug. 25 at Penn.
Leading the program in his 28th season is Ray Goon who took over the program in 1996 when it was reinstated as a varsity program at the university. Goon has led the program to six CAA Tournament appearances during his tenure with the most recent trip coming in 2022. Goon has a 2-1 record against the Buff & Blue all-time, picking up wins in 2014 and 2015, but falling to GW in the first-ever meeting in 2010.
On the pitch, Drexel is led by Casey Touey, who has two goals and three assists on the season. Touey also leads the team in total shots with 11 and shots on goal with four. The only other Dragon with multiple goals this season is Liv Brocious. Brocious has two goals and one assist in 2024, registering seven shots and three shots on goal. Jess Castorina, Elise Duffy and Makenzie McCready all have one goal on the season, while Ava Boyd, Kelly Jones and Tori Yost have each picked up an assist.
Sammy Widnick has been solid in net for the Dragons this season, playing in all 360 minutes thus far in 2024. Widnick has 15 saves on the year, tallying a 65.2 save percentage on the 43 shots she has faced. She's allowed 15 goals and holds a 2.00 goals allowed average.
