ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Karen Verduzco and Vaida Matuseviciute claimed the doubles Flight A title to headline the GW tennis team's stellar weekend at the Blue & Gold Invite hosted by Navy this weekend.
Verduzco/Matuseviciute went a perfect 3-0 on the weekend after receiving a first-round bye in the tournament draw. The pair of Buff & Blue first-years knocked off a team from Villanova, 6-4, in the title match to claim the highest-level doubles crown of the event.
In the Flight C doubles bracket, GW's Madison Lee teamed with Navy's Manci Pal and marched to the title in dominant fashion. The pair went 4-0, capping off the perfect weekend with a 6-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.
In singles action, Victoria Sasinka had a solid weekend in Flight B, finishing 2-1 and falling in the semifinals. In the same bracket, Matsueviciute advanced to the quarterfinals but was ultimately defeated 6-2, 6-2.
In Flight C singles, Solange Skeene advanced to the finals but was defeated by Villanova's Olivia Corcoran to finish as the runner-up. After an opening-round loss in Flight C, Lee put together two victories before falling in the consolation semis.
Similarly, in Flight D, Alejandra Ramirez, GW's lone senior on the team, was defeated in the first round but made a run in the consolation bracket as well. Ramirez put together a streak of three straight wins to advance to the finals match. Ramirez fell 4-1, 4-1 to Navy's Vanessa Popescu to end her weekend.
The Revolutionaries continue their fall slate next weekend at the River City Tennis Open hosted by the University of Richmond. Action will take place at the Westhampton Tennis Complex in Richmond, Va., with a start time still TBA.
