Tennis Opens Fall Season at Bedford Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The George Washington tennis team opened the 2024 fall season with a solid showing at the Bedford Cup hosted by the University of Maryland at JTCC this weekend. The Buff & Blue earned three third-place finishes in singles action and one in doubles play to highlight the strong season opener.
Vaida Matuseviciute, Victoria Sasinka and Solange Skeene all finished third in their respective draws in singles play for GW. Matuseviciute competed in flight two, Sasinka in flight three and Skeene in flight four. Each went 2-1 on the weekend and picked up victories on Sunday to take bronze in their respective brackets. Patricia Rogozoveca and Karen Verduzco represented the Revolutionaries in flight one, both falling in the opening round. Madison Lee also competed in flight three with Sasinka, but fell in the opening round on Friday. Alejandra Ramirez was GW's lone competitor in flight five, falling in Friday's opening round as well.
In doubles action, the teams of Verduzco/Rogozovea and Lee/Matuseviciute each competed in the blue bracket for GW. Lee and Matuseviciute ultimately advanced to the third-place match but were defeated 6-1 by West Virginia. In the red bracket, the team of Sasinka/Ramirez also advanced to the third-place match, coming out victorious by a score of 6-4 over a pair of players from Delaware State.
GW returns to the courts in two weeks to compete in the Blue and Gold Invite hosted by Navy. The event will be held over three days from September 27-29, with more details coming soon. Follow GWsports.com for the latest information.
