GW alumna with five years of playing experience joins coaching staff
WASHINGTON - Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker and the George Washington University softball team have announced alumna Maggie Greco as its next graduate assistant coach. Greco, an Atlantic 10 champion, NCAA Tournament participant and A-10 All-Conference third baseman returns to the team in a new capacity for 2025, fresh off her graduate season.Â
"I am honored to continue my journey with the George Washington softball program in a new capacity. Thank you to Coach Schoonmaker and the rest of the coaching staff for bringing me on board," said Greco. "The time that I have spent on this team for the past five years has been the hallmark of my time at this university, and getting the opportunity to spend my last year here as a part of this program is something that I am extremely grateful for."
Greco came to GW from Bolingbrook, Ill., and began her career in the shortened 2020 season. Since then, she surpassed 200 career games with a career batting average of .283, including a career best mark as a graduate student with a .301 average in 2024. Greco was also a defensive leader during her tenure as a student-athlete with a career .967 fielding percentage on 285 chances.Â
"We are thrilled to welcome Maggie Greco to our staff and into her new role within the program," said Schoonmaker. "Maggie is a driven leader who had an incredible career in the Buff & Blue as a student-athlete. She was an exceptional ball player, a remarkable student and she is a top-notch human being."
Greco was placed on the A-10 All-Rookie team during her first full season in 2021, when she appeared in 36 games, playing both in the infield and outfield. She hit for a .294 average in 2021 and boasted a .415 on-base percentage on a team that won the A-10 regular season and tournament championships and made the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
Greco saw a boost in playing time in 2022, starting and appearing in 50 games at third base. She finished the 2022 campaign with 38 hits, 27 runs, 18 RBI and eight extra-base hits, in a season which she helped GW win its second-straight A-10 regular season championship.
"Maggie has been a part of two championship teams here at GW and knows what it takes to achieve our championship goals," Schoonmaker continued. "Her experience as a student-athlete at GW will be an invaluable asset to both our team and our staff. We look forward to watching her impact the next generation of Revolutionaries both on and off the diamond."
By 2023, Greco had cemented herself as GW's starting third baseman. That season, she was GW's most dangerous player offensively during A-10 play, sporting an eye-popping 1.035 OPS, .351 AVG and 25 BB vs. conference opponents. She also totaled a career-high 20 RBI during the 2023 campaign.
Greco's graduate season was one for the record books. She scored a career-high 44 runs in 53 games played, good for eighth most in a single-season in program history. Greco's legacy on the diamond can be seen through her multiple placements in the program's all-time, top-ten records, including third in sac hits (33), fourth in triples (7), fifth in games played (205), sixth in walks (76) and seventh in runs scored (106).Â
"I am excited to continue to be close to the game and the team that means so much to me, and to help bring another A-10 championship back to this university," said Greco. "Our former Graduate Assistants, and my former teammates, Faith Weber and Sierra Lange, had such a positive influence during their time here. I hope I can bring just as much joy and love to the field as they did for us during my last year with the team."
Greco completed her first increment of Officer Candidate School for the United States Marine Corps this past June. She plans on finishing the last six weeks of training next summer and commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant. Once she completes her contract with the US Marine Corps, Greco has aspirations of becoming a federal law enforcement agent, continuing on a path of service for the United States.
