WASHINGTON- Under the guidance of Head Coach Terry Weir, The George Washington University men's and women's cross country programs will open their 2024 season on Friday, August 30th at the Big East Preview in Leesburg, Va.Â
Â
THE EVENT
The race, hosted by Georgetown University, will be held at Morven Park in Leesburg, Va. The men will compete in a 6k course, while the women will be challenged in a 5k course. The men are scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. with the women following at 6:15 p.m. This year, two teams are competing in the race; the Revolutionaries will face DMV foe Georgetown on the course Friday evening.Â
Â
THE ROSTER
The GW men's team returns 13 runners from last year's squad that finished fifth in the Atlantic 10 Championships. The team also welcomes the addition of eight first-year students who will look to put GW over the top and contend for the A-10 crown this season. Highlighting the group of returners are sophomore Michael Bohlke and junior Jacob Heredia. During their tenure with the Revolutionaries, Bohlke has claimed All-Conference honors in the Atlantic 10; last year, Heredia set a program record in the 8k at the A-10 cross country championships. Both program veterans will look to lead GW to the top of the pack this season.Â
Â
On the women's side, GW enters the 2023 season with 16 returners from last year's team. The returners will look to build off the program's recent success which includes claiming its first A-10 title in 2021 and a second place finish in 2023. Last year's finish marked the fifth year the program has finished fourth place or higher in the conference in each of the past five seasons, thus cementing the program as a serious contender for the league crown each year. Adding to their already talented group, GW will welcome 14 first-year students to the squad who will look to make an immediate impact this season. Headlining the returners is junior Sarah Mitchell. Last season, Mitchell claimed All-Conference honors at last year's A-10 Championships, in addition to receiving A-10 performer of the week following her sixth-place finish in the 6k at the Navy Invitational last season.Â
Â
ON THE OPPONENT
The Georgetown Hoyas enter the fall season with national preseason accolades from the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, with the women ranking no. 16 in the preseason poll. Â Regionally, the Hoyas claimed the no. 1 slot for the Mid-Atlantic region for the women and the men clocked in at no. 3 in the Mid-Atlantic region. Both teams return a wealth of talent from last season which led to a women's BIG EAST Championship for the four-time reigning squad and an 18th-place showing at the NCAA Championships. The men also hold a top 3 finish at both the BIG EAST and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.Â
