PHILADELPHIA, PA - Both the men's and women's cross country teams battled the sloppy conditions at Belmont Plateau and placed in the top ten of the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday morning. Junior Chris Pisano paced the men with a 19th place overall finish en route to a seventh place team finish, GW's best since 2003 when they finished sixth. Junior Audrey Noonan placed in the top 10 for the second straight year at the conference championships, finishing 9th to lead the women to a ninth place team finish, the Colonials best conference finish since the Atlantic 10 expansion in 2005.
Pisano handled the steady downpour and covered the eight-kilometer (5-mile) course in 26:22 to lead GW. Junior Collin Stevenson took second for the Colonials, finishing 42nd overall in 27:02. The sophomore duo of Andrew Coleman and Robbie Lockhart took third and fourth, respectively for GW, finishing in 54th and 58th overall in 27:23 and 27:27. Competing in just his second race of the season, senior Joe Altenau rounded out the scoring for the Colonials, crossing the finish line in 68th overall in 27:42.
Noonan, now a two-time All-Conference performer, led the Colonials while crossing the finish in 19:01. Senior Mae Polhemus recorded her best time ever at the Atlantic 10 Championships, placing 16th in 19:21. Meaghan Smith took third for GW, finishing 36th overall in 20:18. Freshmen Jessica Stern also ran well in her first Atlantic 10 Championship, placing 52nd in 20:36. Rounding out the scoring for the Colonials was freshman Laura Petrik who completed the 5,000 meter course in 21:33.
The Colonials will close out their 2007 season at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Saturday, November 10 in Bethlehem, PA.
