Cross Country Takes Third at Carnegie Mellon Invitational

PITTSBURGH, PA - Both the men's and women's cross country teams took third in their respective races at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Junior Audrey Noonan won the individual title for the second straight season at the Invite in 18:28.02. Junior Chris Pisano led the men with a 9th place finish in 26:09.69.
Noonan was the first of three women for GW to place in the top 10. Senior Mae Polhemus placed sixth out of 197 runners in a personal record, 19:02.69. Sophomore Meaghan Smith, despite an injury, placed ninth in a personal record, 19:24.02. A pair of freshman rounded out the scorers for the Colonials as Jessica Stern placed 22nd overall in 19:59.96 and Laura Petrik finished 53rd in 20:42.69. Katie Walsh followed closely in 54th place, clocking in a personal best, 20:44.73. Three Colonials made their collegiate debuts with freshman Estelle Faulkner leading in 22:01.09, good for 94th place overall. Sophomore Jaskaren Randhawa and freshman Phillipa Spencer placed 109th and 110th in 22:49.10 and 22:49.50, respectively. Sophomore Kelly Wills who raced most of her freshman season, made her season debut and finished in 22:24.44, good for 103rd overall.
Pisano was the only Colonial to place in the top 10 but two other men finished in the top 20 out of 230 runners. Sophomore Robbie Lockhart finished second for GW in a personal record, 26:24.51, good for 16th overall. Junior Collin Stevenson finished 20th overall in 26:37.39. Rounding out the top five for the Colonials were junior Keith Moody in 21st place at 26:38.61 and sophomore Stephen Rutgers in 23rd place at 26:41.80, both personal records. Also performing well for GW was Mark Drath who finish 33rd in 27:04.16. Freshman Zach Borenstein and seniors Christian Woodside and Joe Altenau all placed in the top 70. Borenstein took 62nd in 27:35.20 and Woodside took 64th in 27:38.66. Altenau made his season debut and finished 70th in 27:48.27. Freshman Adam Mickley took 153rd in 29:57.14.
The Colonials next competition is at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Philadelphia, PA at Belmont Plateau on Saturday, October 27. Audrey Noonan finished seventh at last year's A-10 Championship in a Colonials record 18:19.20 to be named to the All-Conference team.
