WASHINGTON -Â GW lacrosse defender Stella Ray was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team, the league announced on Wednesday.
Ray repeats as a Second Team representative after earning the same spot last year, in addition to an All-Rookie designation a season ago. The sophomore was once again among the nation's best in draw controls and ground balls, serving as one of GW's top defenders throughout the year.
The Charlotte native blew away the GW single-season record with 87 draw controls, 15 more than the previous mark of 72, held by Nicole Lacey since 2012. She was third in the league and 44th in the NCAA with 5.12 draw controls per contest. In the process, Ray became just the fourth member in program history to reach 100 draw controls in her career, currently sitting third all-time with 146.
Ray also ranked second in the A-10, and 16th nationally, with 2.88 ground balls per game, totalling 49 on the year, good enough for fourth-most in a single season for the Buff & Blue. She now holds two of the top four rankings after a program-record 60 last year, and her career total of 109 career ground balls is already ninth-most in just two seasons.
