BRONX, N.Y. - The George Washington softball team fell in both games at Fordham on Saturday. GW falls to 18-17 on the season and 5-6 in the A-10 ahead of the series finale tomorrow at noon.Â
GAME 1 (GW 2, Fordham 3)
Eight GW runners left on base was the difference in game one as the Rams beat the Revolutionaries by a final of 3-2.
First-year pitcher/utility Cece Smith went up against Fordham's Devon Miller, both of whom had quality outings. Miller picked up the win for the Rams, throwing a complete game with two earned runs on five hits, six walks and three strikeouts. Smith went 6.0, allowing three earned runs, striking out four and walking just two.Â
Fordham struck first with two runs in the third inning coming on a two-RBI double, but the GW Revs came back to tie the game with two runs in the fifth. Alexa Williams drove in the first run on a single through the right side, before Allison Heffley came around to score after stealing third and advancing home on a throwing error.
The Rams didn't let the game stay tied for long as they drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. GW's best chance to equalize came in the top of the seventh, as they had runners on first and second with two outs and Williams at-bat. Williams reached on a line drive to left, sending Gilliland from second to home, but she was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the game.
The Revolutionaries and Rams were even in game one at five hits apiece. Maggie Greco accounted for one hit, but reached base in each at-bat as she walked three times.
GAME 2 (GW 0, Fordham 2)
Another pitchers' duel went the way of the Rams as Fordham won game two, 2-0.Â
Rose Cano got the nod in the circle for GW and pitched well, allowing two runs (none earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings. Comparatively, Fordham's Holly Beeman went the distance and struck out three on three hits allowed and zero runs scored.
Fordham took the lead in the first on a Sydney Wells single up the middle, before doubling its lead on a Bailey Enoch RBI single to left-center in the fourth.Â
Cano led GW's efforts offensively as well, accounting for two of GW's three hits. GW had just one runner in scoring position in the contest as they were outhit, 5-3.
