FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Washington baseball team saw its four-game winning streak and its perfect A-10 record snatched away following a 5-2 loss at the hands of George Mason on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops GW to 19-11 on the season and 4-1 in conference play.
Junior Teddy Brennan got the starting nod for GW, his first since a 4-3 win over Canisius on March 22. After breezing through the first inning, Brennan ran into trouble in the second, giving up two runs to the Patriots. An inning later, Mason tacked on two more runs courtesy of a two-run blast from James Quinn-Irons. The homer doubled the Patriot lead to 4-0, the largest deficit GW had faced since the team's 8-7 loss against Towson on March 27.
An inning later in the fourth, the Buff & Blue chipped away at the lead, tallying its first run of the game off a fielder's choice from Tim Nicholson. Nicholson, who recorded two of GW's three RBI in yesterday's win, recorded an RBI in today's game after Sam Gates scored from third base. Following Brennan's departure in the fifth inning, Brayden Kurtz entered and pitched three solid frames for the Revolutionaries. Kurtz's lone blemish came in the seventh inning, allowing one run off a sacrifice fly. Despite the run allowed, Kurtz didn't relinquish a hit in the outing, striking out one batter in the process.
With the game on the line in the ninth, GW attempted a late comeback but was only able to muster one run. Following a two-out single from Steve DiTomaso, Robbie Lavey brought him home on a single. DiTomaso managed to steal second during Lavey's at-bat, leading to GW's second run of the day. Despite the late push, George Mason hung on for the 5-2 win, evening the series at one game apiece.
Konnor Eaton earned the win on the mound for the Patriots, moving him to 3-2 on the season. Brennan was charged with the loss, his second of the year. Brennan now holds a record of 1-2 in 2024. Chad Gartland secured the save for the Patriots, his second of the year.
Both teams return to Fairfax tomorrow for the series rubber match at 1:00 p.m. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
