Softball Celebrates Seniors, Narrowly Falls in Series Finale to UMass

WASHINGTON - Senior Day in The District saw six long-time members of the GW softball program honored ahead of the series finale vs. UMass. However, a back-and-forth finale vs. the Minutewomen did not go GW's way as the Revolutionaries fell, 6-5, dropping to 24-25 overall and 9-14 in the A-10.

It was a seesaw game from the outset. UMass scored first on an RBI double in the opening frame, but the Revolutionaries answered right away as Ashley Corpuz launched her team-best seventh home run of the season in GW's second at bat to knot the game at 1-1.

Corpuz's home run was the first of three straight solo shots between the teams. The second came off the bat of UMass' Grace Cadden to make it 2-1 Minutewomen in the second, but the third came from GW senior Alena Ramirez to tie things back up at 2-2. Ramirez's home run came on her Senior Day and was the first of her career, sparking a three run inning for the Revolutionaries. Allison Heffley was responsible for the other two RBI in the third, coming on a single through the right side with two runners in scoring position, to make it 4-2 GW.

The Minutewomen answered and tied the game in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI double, before taking a 6-4 lead in the sixth after an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Heffley was able to bring GW back within one run on an RBI single in the sixth, scoring Cadence Gilliland, but that's where GDUB's afternoon ended as UMass secured the 6-5 win in the finale.

GW outhit UMass 12-10. Corpuz, Heffley, Alexa Williams, Paige Hayward and Ramirez each finished the afternoon 2-4. Sophia Torreso pitched all seven innings for GW, striking out three batters on five earned runs.

The Revolutionaries return to the GW Softball Field this Tuesday to face Georgetown in the final non-conference and home game of the 2024 regular season. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be carried on ESPN+.
