DAYTON, Ohio - The George Washington University softball team went 1-1 in Saturday's A-10 doubleheader at Dayton. GW lost a tight game one, 6-5, before winning game two, 11-8, in 10 innings. GW is now 16-13 overall and 3-2 in the A-10.Â
GAME 1 (GW 5, Dayton 6)
GW led late in the series opener but couldn't bring it to the finish line as the Flyers scored two in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Revolutionaries, 6-5.
The first three innings of the contest went as expected as two of the best pitchers in the A-10, Cece Smith and Izzy Kemp, went toe-to-toe for the first time and were dealing at the start. GW didn't find its way on base in the first three frames, while Dayton reached on two hits and a fielder's choice but didn't convert.
GDUB opened the scoring on an Allison Heffley single in the top of the fourth, but Dayton answered immediately and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. The Revolutionaries did the rest of its damage in the fifth as they took a 5-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Alena Ramirez drove in a run on a single before Maggie Greco brought in a run as she was hit by a pitch and Alexa Williams singled through the left side to score two more.
Dayton cut the lead to 5-4 on a three-run home run in the sixth inning, before scoring the game-winner on a two-RBI double in the seventh.
Ramirez was 3-4 at the top of the order with one RBI and one run.
GAME 2 (GW 11, Dayton 8)
Eight GW runs looked to be enough as the Revolutionaries led 8-1 in the seventh inning, but Dayton scored seven times in the last of the seventh to tie the game, forcing a nail-biting three extra innings, which the Revolutionaries emerged victorious from, 11-8.
Rose Cano entered the circle for GW in the seventh inning to stop the Dayton run and pitched a hitless final 3.2 innings, striking out three while walking two. Cano also helped the cause offensively, driving in RBIs on three separate occasions: in the second inning on a single, in the seventh inning on a solo home run and in the 10th to extend GW's lead on a fielder's choice. Cano picked up the win in the circle, her first of the season.
Also leading the way for GW with standout individual performances were Heffley, Williams and Ashley Corpuz.Â
Heffley was 2-6 with four RBI and three runs scored - her big moment came with the bases loaded in the fourth inning as she broke a tie game with a grand slam to center field. Williams was 5-6 in the game with four RBI and two runs scored. Williams collected two RBI as she hit the second of GW's three home runs in the sixth, before coming up with the eventual game-winner on a two-RBI single in the 10th. Corpuz finished the game 4-5 with a double, one walk and one run scored.
