WASHINGTON - 27 unanswered runs by the George Washington university softball team on Saturday propelled GW to wins in both games of its doubleheader against Cornell. GW trailed 6-0 in game one, but didn't allow a run for the rest of the day and won by final scores of 14-6 and 13-0. GW improves to 6-7 on the year, and returns for its second doubleheader of the weekend as Stony Brook pays a visit to the GW Softball Field on Sunday for a noon first pitch.Â
GAME 1 (GW 14, Cornell 6)
Cornell got out to a quick start in the rain-delayed 1 p.m. first pitch, but the Revolutionaries kept their cool and scored the final 14 runs in the contest to take game one.
Cornell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added to it in the third and fourth, but then came the Revolutionaries. GW batted through the order and managed seven runs in the fourth inning to assume a 7-6 lead. Rose Cano drove in the first two on an RBI double, before both Paige Hayward and Alexa Williams left the park and combined for five RBI on two home runs.
After Cano picked up her third RBI on a single in the fifth, GW erupted again in the sixth, scoring six runs to enact the run rule. Allison Heffley, Mandy Lauth, Alena Ramirez, Ashley Corpuz, Reese Torres and Rylee Brice each picked up RBI, with Brice delivering the exclamation mark on a walk-off single.Â
Cano, Sophia Torreso and Cece Smith each made appearances in the circle. The win goes to Torreso, who struck out two in 1.1 innings of work, and the save goes to Smith who struck out two in 1.0 innings pitched.
Smith delivered an excellent outing in the circle in game two, limiting Cornell to zero runs on just two hits on five strikeouts, and the GW bats stayed hot and launched G-Dub to a 13-0 run-rule win.
GW wasted no time in game two and jumped out to a 4-0 lead after batting through the order in the first. The Revolutionaries tossed another three runs up in the second and five in the third to assume a commanding 12-0 lead. GW added one more run in fourth before clinching the win on the run rule in the fifth.Â
Mandy Lauth, Corpuz and Hayward each finished with a team-high three RBI, while Ramirez and Cano were each responsible for one RBI. GW utilized the small-ball approach well in game two, winning the game without a home run but with 11 hits and nine walks.Â
