Softball Heads to Chapel Hill for Carolina Classic

Revolutionaries due for five games between Friday and Sunday
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team is off to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a five-game stay at the Carolina Classic. The Buff & Blue will face Lipscomb (1 p.m. on Friday & 11 a.m. on Saturday) and North Carolina (6 p.m. on Friday & 1 p.m. on Saturday) on both Friday and Saturday, before finishing the weekend against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday (11 a.m.). Both of GW's games against the host Tar Heels will be carried live on ACCNX.
CLOSING THE BOOK ON CANISIUS
GW hosted its 2024 home-opening doubleheader on Tuesday, splitting results with Canisius. GW won game one, 3-2, behind another quality start from first-year Cece Smith, before slipping in game two and losing, 4-2. Maggie Greco and Ashley Corpuz each collected their first home runs of the season, while first-year Mandy Lauth extended her team-leading RBI total to 10. Â
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
LIPSCOMB
Lipscomb is out to a 3-6 start to the year with wins over Northern Colorado, Towson and IUPUI. The Bison went 2-3 weekend at the Furman Invitational last weekend, which included a close 2-1 loss vs. Georgetown. Lipscomb was 21-29 a season ago, which did not result in a postseason berth.Â
Elise Shewmaker leads Lipscomb in OPS .778 and has collected one double, one home run and three RBI through nine games. Laine Barefoot leads the Bison in ERA (2.57), while Ryleigh Sapp has been responsible for two of the Lipscomb's three wins.
GW leads the all-time series against the Bison, 1-0, which came in a 4-1 win at the Gamecock Invitational in 2022.
NORTH CAROLINA
North Carolina is 6-1 so far this season, most recently taking down in-state rival UNCG in its home opener on Wednesday. UNC was 26-28 a season ago and made the ACC tournament, but was eliminated in the first game by No. 7 Clemson.
The Tar Heels have brought plenty of offense so far this season. As a team they are averaging a 1.052 OPS, with nine individuals above the 1.000 mark. In the circle, Bailey McCachren and Britton Rogers each have two complete game wins. McCachren has the better of ERAs at 1.87.
GW trails North Carolina in the all-time series, 3-1, with GW's only win coming in a 7-0 shutout in 2019.
MOUNT ST. MARY'S
The Mountaineers are 1-3 to begin the season with a win over Monmouth, but losses to USC Upstate, Winthrop and Appalachian State. Through four games, Mount St. Mary's has been outscored 35-12.Â
Elizabeth King leads Mount St. Mary's offensively through four games, starting the season 3-6 with one double, one home run, two RBI and five walks. In the circle, Sophia Schmehl sports a 1.62 ERA and is 1-0 through one start.
GW leads the all-time series against Mount St. Mary's, 18-9-1. The Mountaineers won the most recent meeting last season, 2-1, which snapped an eight-game GW win streak in the series.Â
