CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Having previously downed one Power 5 opponent this season, the ACC's Syracuse Orange, GW softball set its sights on slaying another one with a visit to the home of the Tar Heels for the Carolina Classic on Friday. Butting heads with the hosts Heels, the GW Revs sent last season's first-year sensation, Rose Cano, to the circle, while she also occupied the 5-hole in the batting order. Despite helping her own cause with a solo home run, the first of her career, to left field in the fourth, Cano and GW fell to North Carolina, 9-1.Â
The Tar Heels touched Cano for three in the bottom of the first on three consecutive singles and a RBI flyout. Cano went on to hurl 3.1 innings while allowing seven hits and six earned runs. Sophia Torresco finished off the ballgame for GW, while Cano's blast proved to be GDUB's lone hit in the contest.Â
Kenna Raye Dark went the distance in the circle for the hosts, striking out six and walking two in addition to Cano's homer. After going into the bottom of the fourth in a relatively tight 4-1 contest, North Carolina hung a four-spot on the scoreboard in its half of the inning, and later plated another for good measure in the last of the sixth to end it. The teams battle again tomorrow at 2 p.m., after the Tar Heels meet Mount St. Mary's at 11:30 a.m.Â
George Washington also plays two on Saturday, taking on Lipscomb at 4:30 pm.Â
