WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team opened up play on The Vern on Tuesday with a split against Canisius. The Buff & Blue took a narrow game one, 3-2, before their seventh inning comeback fell just short in game two and they lost, 4-2. GW moves to 4-3 on the season ahead of the Carolina Classic this weekend.Â
GAME 1 (GW 3, CANISIUS 2)
First-year Cece Smith made the start for GW and was lights out, leaving the door open for a late-game Buff & Blue comeback as GW took game one late, 3-2.Â
Canisius got its only offense of the game in the first inning as the Golden Griffins were able to work two across, one earned and one unearned. GW was held off the board until the fourth inning, when red-hot Mandy Lauth scorched a double to drive in Ashley Corpuz and cut the lead in half.
The Golden Griffin's lead stayed at 2-1 until the sixth, when Corpuz unleashed her first long ball of the season, a game-tying solo shot to left-center field. Corpuz's home run got GW's rally started, and after Lauth walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Rose Cano delivered the game-winning RBI single through the left side.
Corpuz finished the game 2-3 with two runs and one RBI. Smith went the distance, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while fanning five.Â
The Buff & Blue fell behind early again in game two, but this time they weren't able to complete the comeback as Canisius walked away with a 4-2 win.
Two quick runs in the top of the first inning left the Revolutionaries in a similar position as game one. GW was able to get one back in the bottom of the first inning on a Maggie Greco deep shot down the left-field line, but Canisius tacked on two more in the fourth which would prove to be enough.
Down 4-1, GW brought the tying run to the plate in the last of the seventh. The Revolutionaries were able to put up one more run on a Corpuz RBI fielder's choice, but the Griffins didn't allow for more late-game GW heroics as they sealed game two.Â
Sophia Torreso (4.0 IP) and Cano (3.0 IP) combined in the circle to allow four runs (two earned).Â
