WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team is gearing up for the first two of 29 games on The Vern this season, when Canisius pays a visit to the GW softball field on Tuesday for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 12 p.m., and coverage of both games will be carried on ESPN+.Â
LAUTH EARNS A-10 POTW
Infielder Mandy Lauth is coming off a major first weekend, which culminated in her selection as the A-10 Player of the Week. Lauth posted gaudy numbers in the first five games of her college career. In 16 at-bats, the Avon, Ind., native collected eight hits (.500 AVG) and an OPS of 1.404, nine RBI, two runs scored, one home run, one double and one triple. Defensively, Lauth converted on all 37 of her chances with 34 putouts and three assists.
OPENING WEEKEND REWIND
GW played five games on Opening Weekend at the Kickin' Chicken Classic, finishing with a 3-2 record. The Buff & Blue went 1-1 on Opening Day, beating Campbell - the reigning Big South champions - 4-3, after falling to Bucknell in the season opener. The Revolutionaries then fell to the hosts, Coastal Carolina, on Saturday, before rebounding against Bucknell with a 5-1 win and picking up a 6-5 win over Syracuse - the program's first "Power 5" win since 2019.
FEEL THE VERN
The Buff & Blue return to The Vern for the first time this season, looking to stay perfect in home openers under Chrissy Schoonmaker. In 2023, GW welcomed in Coppin State for the first two home games of the year, which resulted in 11-0 & 6-2 GW victories. One year earlier, GW opened play at home with a three-game sweep of Fordham. GW is 18-14 under Schoonmaker when playing in The District.Â
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Canisius will be playing on the fourth of four straight days to begin their season on Tuesday. The Griffins opened their season over the weekend at 1-3, falling to Boston University and twice to Charlotte before picking up their first win of 2024 against Queens. Canisius will play Queens once more at noon on Monday before making the trip to D.C.
Canisius was defeated last season in the MAAC Championship game, and returns 16 players from that 2023 roster. The Griffins roster features the reigning MAAC Pitcher of the Year Megan Giese, and features All-MAAC First Team selections Christie McGee-Ross, Gianna Fazzolari and Rosie Gomez. Canisius added five first-years and one transfer for 2024.
LOOKING AHEAD
GW heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., this weekend for a five-game stay at the Carolina Classic. GW will face Lipscomb and UNC on both Friday and Saturday, before closing the weekend against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday.Â
