Men's Basketball Falls Late at Richmond, 66-61

RICHMOND, Va. - Despite rallying from a double-digit, second-half deficit to take a 13-point lead of its own, GW men's basketball was unable to hold on and let the A-10 opener slip through its fingertips in a 66-61 setback at defending regular season champion Richmond on Tuesday evening.
GW struggled through its toughest offensive half of the season in the opening 20 minutes, making just 6-of-25 shots (24%) from the floor and went into the locker room trailing, 29-21. Richmond scored the first three points of the half before graduate student Gerald Drumgoole Jr. caught fire and made back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to awake the Revolutionaries from their post-holiday slumber.
Drumgoole buried six triples in an eight-minute stretch to help the Buff & Blue go on an elongated 31-7 run that gave the GW Revs their largest lead, 52-39, with just over nine minutes remaining.
However, Richmond began to whittle away primarily via the charity stripe. The Spiders, who had attempted just five free throws in the first 30 minutes, paraded their way to the line 15 times in the final 10 minutes and made every single attempt.
GW still had the lead in the final minute, 61-60, but another foul call put Delonnie Hunt on the line with 24 seconds left where he made both to move the Spiders in front by a point.
Darren Buchanan Jr. missed a contested layup on the ensuing possession and Hunt made four more free throws to salt the game away.
Drumgoole finished with a new career-high seven 3-pointers in the contest, scoring all 27 of his points after halftime. Trey Moss and Buchanan scored 11 each, but GW's bench, a strength during non-conference play, was held to just five points, all from redshirt freshman Christian Jones.
The Buff & Blue were limited to a season-low 33.3% shooting and only 16 points in the paint, also a new season-low. Richmond was led by Hunt's 19 and 17 from Dusan Neskovic.
GW now sets its sights on the A-10 home opener, set for Saturday afternoon at the Smith Center against Dayton. Tip is set for 12 p.m. with live coverage on USA Network.
