ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands - GW men's basketball found its 3-point stroke in the second half of Saturday's Paradise Jam contest vs. Louisiana, running past the Ragin' Cajuns, 83-74.
GW knocked down 7-of-11 from beyond the arc after halftime, and 10 3-pointers in total, turning a tight back-and-forth affair into a runaway. Trailing 43-42 four minutes into the second half, Trey Autry nailed a 3-pointer to give GW the lead for good and open the floodgates from beyond the arc.
The Revolutionaries went on a 21-5 run in the blink of an eye that featured a barrage from deep. Autry's triple was followed by Jacoi Hutchinson making three free throws. Darren Buchanan Jr. followed with his first triple of the year before Autry canned another and was fouled in the process. The potential four-point play turned into a five-point trip after Sean Hansen corralled the missed free throw and laid it in. Hansen added a trey of his own on the next trip for good measure.
Autry was the catalyst in the run as he ended up with a career-high 16, all of which came after halftime. He made all three 3-pointers and 7-of-8 from the line.
GW dominated the smaller Cajuns with the dynamic duo of Buchanan and Rafael Castro each notching double-doubles, the third time this season the pair has done so in the same game. Buchanan registered a GW-high 17 points with 10 rebounds while Castro chipped in 13 and 11.
Five Revolutionaries reached double figures in total, also the third time this season with at least a quintet of double-digit scorers, as Trey Moss scored 13 and Gerald Drumgoole Jr. provided 11.
GW paraded to the charity stripe with regularity in the game, making 35-of-42 free throws in its first game with at least 40 free throw attempts in eight years.
GW will enjoy a day off on Sunday before wrapping up the Paradise Jam on Monday at 3 p.m. ET vs. Illinois State, who defeated UAB, 84-83, on Saturday to set the matchup in the fifth-place game. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
