WASHINGTON - Rising redshirt sophomore Darren Buchanan Jr. of the GW men's basketball team was honored by the Atlantic 10 on Monday in advance of the conference's annual media day, being tabbed a member of the Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team.
Buchanan adds the accolade to his All-Rookie selection at the end of his debut campaign that also saw him garner four Rookie of the Week honors. The D.C. native led the A-10, among qualifiers, in field goal percentage (54.6) last season and also ranked among conference leaders in rebounding (6.6 rpg, 7th) and scoring (15.6 ppg, 9th).
Buchanan was the league's top scorer among first-years in 2023-24 and also led all A-10 rookies in minutes played. In the process, he was the only freshman in the country to put up 15.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg last year and became the first A-10 rookie to post those averages since UMass' Tre Mitchell in 2019-20.
GW was selected to finish 13th in this year's preseason poll, matching its mark from Head Coach Chris Caputo's first season in 2022-23, when the Buff & Blue ultimately finished in a tie for sixth. VCU was picked to win the league with 14 of 30 first-place votes. Six different programs received at least one first place-vote in what is expected to be a wide-open conference race.
The All-Conference First Team features Nate Santos (Dayton), Des Watson (Loyola Chicago), Erik Reynolds II (Saint Joseph's), Robbie Avila (Saint Louis), Gibson Jimerson (Saint Louis) and Max Shulga (VCU).
Buchanan is joined on the second team by Posh Alexander (Dayton), Darius Maddox (George Mason), Xzayvier Brown (Saint Joseph's), Joe Bamisile (VCU) and Zeb Jackson (VCU).
GW fans can get in the game by supporting NIL opportunities for Buff & Blue student-athletes through contributions to the Friends of George Collective. Fans can also directly support through donations to the Buff & Blue Fund.
