Tennis Concludes ITA Regional Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The doubles pair of Karen Verduzco and Vaida Matuseviciute concluded the ITA Regional Championships with an appearance in the quarterfinals, GW's deepest run at the event since at least 2019.
DAY ONE – Thursday, October 17
First-year Vaida Matuseviciute finished 2-0 in consolation play to advance to Friday's main draw first round. Matuseviciute will join teammate Patricia Ungure-Rogozoveca who received an automatic bid into the main bracket. Matuseviciute's first-round match is slated for 11:00 a.m., while Ungure-Rogozoveca will compete at 1:00 p.m.
In other qualifying action, Victoria Sasinka, Karen Verduzco, Alejandra Ramirez and Solange Skeene all finished 1-1 on Thursday, failing to advance to the main draw. Sasinka and Verduzco both won the first match of the day, while Ramirez and Skeene fell in match one but bounced back for consolation victories.
Tomorrow will also feature the first round of doubles play, with three Buff & Blue teams seeing action. Ramirez/Skeene will play at 2:30 p.m. and Madison Lee/Sasinka will begin at 3:15 p.m. Verduzco/Matuseviciute's match is still TBA.
DAY TWO – Friday, October 18
The doubles pair of Verduzco/Matuseviciute tallied an 8-1 victory over Towson to headline GW's day two performance at the ITA Regional Championships. Verduzco/Matuseviciute advance to the round of 32 and will compete against Maryland tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
Also in doubles, the team of Alejandra Ramirez and Solange Skeene fell in the first round of the main draw. The pair lost, 8-4, to Longwood. GW's Madison Lee and Victoria Sasinka also fell in the first round of doubles action, dropping an 8-7 match to Liberty. Both teams have been eliminated.
In singles, Matuseviciute and Patricia Ungure-Rogozoveca were both dropped in the first round of main draw action. The loss moves both to the consolation bracket where they will compete tomorrow. Matuseviciute is slated for a 10:15 a.m. match, while Ungure-Rogozoveca will play at 12:00 p.m.
DAY THREE – Saturday, October 19
The doubles pair of Verduzco and Matuseviciute dominated in their second-round doubles match, defeating Maryland, 8-2, to advance to the Round of 16.Verduzco/Matusevicute have rolled in their first two matches, winning by a combined total of 16-3. The pair will compete in the Round of 16 tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., facing off against Virginia Tech.
In consolation singles action, Ungure-Rogozoveca and Matuseviciute both picked up singles wins. Ungure-Rogozoveca defeated Howard, while Matuseviciute earned a win over Virginia. After their victories, both were defeated later in the day, eliminating them from singles play.
DAY FOUR – Sunday, October 20
Verduzco/Matuseviciute opened their Sunday with a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Virginia Tech in the Round of 16. The win was the pair's third of the event. In the quarterfinals, GW was matched up with Virginia's Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky and were ultimately defeated 8-0.
Following Sunday's quarterfinal matches, the remaining four teams will compete on Monday for the championship. Despite the loss, the pair of Verduzco/Matuseviciute finish 3-1 at the event with victories over Towson, Maryland and Virginia Tech.
