WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team (2-2-2, 0-0-0 A-10) returns to the GW Soccer Field on Saturday to host Loyola Chicago (3-1-1, 0-0-0 A-10) in the A-10 opener and first-ever meeting between the sides on The Vern. Kickoff between the Revolutionaries and Ramblers is set for 3 p.m., and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
ON TO THE A-10
The Revolutionaries began the season unbeaten through its first four matches, before falling to a pair of quality teams in San Diego last weekend. The Buff and Blue are still a perfect 2-0-0 on home turf and will look to extend its home unbeaten streak to three against Loyola Chicago.
GW welcomed 17 newcomers to the roster in 2023, which has proven to be impactful. Eighty-eight percent (23 of 26) of GW's points through six matches have come from newcomers, and four of six starts in net have been awarded to first-year Tom Macauley.
The Buff and Blue went 4-4 in the A-10 last season en route to an A-10 Quarterfinal appearance, where it lost to Loyola Chicago, 1-0, in Chicago.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
The Ramblers have begun the year at 3-1-1 with wins over Lindenwood, Oakland and IUPUI, a tie with Cleveland State and a loss to University of Illinois Chicago. Loyola Chicago holds the best goal differential in the conference ahead of A-10 play at +7.
Ramblers' first-year Petar Janic is a name to look out for - he was selected as the most recent A-10 Rookie of the Week after posting his first career goal in Loyola Chicago's 1-0 win over Oakland. One match later, Janic scored his second and third career goals in the Ramblers' 5-0 win over IUPUI.
Loyola Chicago holds a 2-0-0 all-time record against GW, which includes last season's A-10 Quarterfinal match and a 2022 regular season meeting.
LOOKING AHEAD
GW has a quick turnaround, breaking from A-10 play to host District rival Howard on Tuesday (3 p.m.). Then on Saturday, Sept. 23, GW travels to Dayton for its first conference road test of 2023 (1 p.m.).
