WASHINGTON – Coming off a hard-fought 2-1 victory against UNC Greensboro, the George Washington women's soccer team will look to continue its winning ways with two non-conference matchups this week. The Buff & Blue host Youngstown State on Thursday at 3 p.m. and will travel to UMBC for a 4 p.m. match on Sunday. Thursday's match against the Penguins will be available on ESPN+, while Sunday's matchup at UMBC will be available to watch via American East TV.
HOT START
After last Sunday's win over UNC Greensboro, GW now sits at 2-1 on the young season. Leading the way for the Buff & Blue is sophomore Aoi Kataoka with four points through the team's first three matches. Kataoka, an A-10 All-Rookie Team honoree last year, tallied her first goal of the season on Sunday against UNCG. Kataoka also has two assists on the year, both of which were recorded in GW's 7-0 season-opening win over Delaware State. Also making contributions early on is first-year Abby Caoile who has four points on two goals this year. Caoile registered both goals in GW's win over Delaware State, the first collegiate match of her career.
SCOUTING THE PENGUINS
Youngstown State travels to the DMV after most recently suffering its first loss of the season to Canisius last Sunday. The Penguins, who sit at 3-1 overall this year, failed to score a goal in their 1-0 loss to the Griffins last weekend. Members of the Horizon League, Youngstown State was picked to finish fourth in the conference's preseason poll earlier this month. Thursday's matchup will be the Penguins' second match against an A-10 opponent after defeating Duquesne 2-1 earlier this season.
The Penguins are led by sophomores Chloe Weiland and Taylor Berry who both have four points this season. Weiland currently has two goals on the year, while Berry has one goal and two assists. Defensively, Youngstown State leans on their senior goalkeeper Brooklynn Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick, a four-time Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week honoree, has 17 saves through four matches this season. Kirkpatrick boasts a .850 save percentage, and she's also tallied one clean sheet this year.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS
UMBC currently holds a record of 2-2 overall and will be in action this Thursday when at Towson. The Retrievers are coming off a 1-0 win over Long Island last Sunday that saw them emerge victorious despite being outshot 17-13. Members of the America East Conference, UMBC was picked to finish eighth out of nine teams in this year's preseason coaches' poll.
Leading the way for UMBC is midfielder Cheyenne Payne who has one goal on six total shots. Forwards Meghan McKye and Payton Schenning both have one goal on the season for the Retrievers as well. Defensively, goalkeeper Abbey Cowles has started in net in all four of UMBC's matches this season. Cowles has racked up 25 saves on the year and currently holds a save percentage of .893.
