Volleyball Falls at American, 3-0

WASHINGTON – GW volleyball began the 2023 season at American on Friday night with a 3-0 loss to the Eagles at Bender Arena, 24-26, 21-25, 13-25.
BY THE NUMBERS
In her first game in Buff & Blue, graduate student Grace Wiczek led the GW attack with eight kills. Liv Womble added six kills and first-year Haylee Brown put down six to pace a GW offense that tallied 31 kills on the night. Dilara Elmacioglu was GW's primary setter, recording 19 assists and Maeve Loughran added nine.
Amina Robinson led the Buff & Blue defense with 18 digs and Salem Yohannes tallied 11. GW came up with 16 blocks as a team, with graduate student Kelsey Watkins accounting for six.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One featured 14 ties and five lead changes, with the largest lead of the set favoring GW twice at 17-14 and 18-15. Seven kills for American in the second half of the opening stanza helped to a narrow 26-24 Set One victory.
American sketched a 7-2 lead in the opening stages of Set Two, but four GW kills and a pair of attack errors from the home team put GW ahead at 14-11. American regained control, outscoring GW 7-1 to create its own three-point separation at 18-15. GW was able to get within two, but three-straight points from the Eagles put American up 2-0 in the match.
Powered by a six-point scoring run to begin the third set, American quickly moved to a 10-3 advantage, doubling GW's offensive output with 14 kills to the visitors' seven to earn the 3-0 victory on opening night.
UP NEXT
The Buff & Blue will close out opening weekend at Howard on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first serve at Burr Gymnasium.
