BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The George Washington water polo team has been picked to finish second in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) and received votes nationally, according to the Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) preseason poll.
GW earned 90 points in the MAWPC preseason poll, tied for second in the rankings with Navy. Fordham was picked to finish first in the conference, receiving 100 points in the poll, and Bucknell followed closely behind the Revolutionaries and Midshipmen, picked to finish fourth with 89 points. Johns Hopkins rounded out the MAWPC top five, picked to finish in fifth with 49 points.
The Revolutionaries received four points in the national poll and are the first team listed outside of the top 20. Also featured in the national poll from the MAWPC are No. 15 Fordham, No. 20 Navy and Bucknell (receiving votes).
The team's strength comes from the goal, with Second Team All-MAWPC goalkeeper, Luca Castorina, having logged every minute last season and notching 287 saves with a 49.6 save percentage in 2022.
GW will be tested this season with a high-level of competition, facing a total of eight teams featured in the national poll, including five teams outside of the MAWPC: No. 8 Princeton, No. 13 Loyola Marymount, No. 17 California Baptist, No. 18 Harvard and Brown (receiving votes).
The 40th season of GW men's water polo begins on Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Revolutionaries travel to take on Long Island (2 p.m.) and No. 8 Princeton (6 p.m.) at the Princeton Mini in Princeton, N.J.
