WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball dipped back into international territory with the signing of Zamoku Weluche-Ume from England, it was announced on Friday.
"Zam is one of the best young players in Europe," head coach Chris Caputo said. "His experience with the EuroCup London Lions allowed him to play and practice with grown men on a daily basis including several former NBA players. He gives us tremendous versatility defensively, great athletic ability, and an emerging offensive game that will fit in perfectly with our style of play."
Weluche-Ume played for his hometown London Lions of the British Basketball League, who won the league with an impressive 32-4 mark. At just 18 years of age, he contributed to the championship team alongside former NBA athletes such as Sam Dekker, Kosta Koufos and Miye Oni. The youngest player on the team in England's top division of pro basketball, Weluche-Ume over 10 minutes per game in 12 appearances.
Weluche-Ume's prep career also includes time at Barking Abbey School in London, where he was a member of the school's elite Basketball Academy for 16-19 year olds. He's also competed for England's U16 and U18 national teams and is currently trying out for the U20 program to compete in next month's FIBA U20 European Championship in Greece.
The international prospect is not the first brought on board for head coach Chris Caputo, who also signed German national Benny Schröder earlier this year. The duo joins Australia native Keegan Harvey as international student-athletes on the 2023-24 roster.
GW has had a storied history of success with international players, most recently with Yuta Watanabe (Japan), Kevin Larsen (Denmark) and Patricio Garino (Argentina) all playing at the professional level. Further back, Hall of Famers Pops Mensah-Bonsu (England) and Yegor Mescheriakov (Belarus), and first round NBA draft pick Yinka Dare (Nigeria) also made a storied impact in the Buff & Blue.
