2022 All-Met and Gatorade Player of the Year joins Buff & Blue
WASHINGTON - One of the top D.C. public high school prospects in recent memory is returning home to suit up for the Buff & Blue. GW men's basketball head coach Chris Caputo announced the signing of Darren Buchanan, Jr. on Monday, bringing frontcourt depth to this year's transfer class.
"We are excited to bring a D.C. native and two-time DCIAA Player of the Year back to D.C.," Caputo said. "Darren brings an infectious personality combined with the physical toughness and competitiveness we want to be a staple in our program. He gives us positional versatility in the front court on both ends of the floor."
A standout performer at Woodrow Wilson (now Jackson-Reed) High School, Buchanan was twice named Player of the Year in the DCIAA, the city's public school league. During his senior season, he averaged a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while earning Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year and D.C. Gatorade Player of the Year honors. He led his team to an undefeated conference title and an appearance in the DCSAA Championship Game.
Buchanan was rated as a consensus three-star prospect in high school, the #2 player in D.C., and the #48 small forward in his class before committing to Virginia Tech. He redshirted this past season for the Hokies and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
In addition to his Player of the Year accolades, Buchanan helped lead Wilson, also the alma mater of GW's Ricky Lindo Jr., to a pair of DCIAA titles and was a two-time First Team All-State and First Team All-DCIAA selection. He also played on the Nike EYBL Circuit for three years with Team Durant.
Buchanan is the second transfer addition to the program, joining Benny Schröder, whose signing was announced in April.
