Seventh-inning rally boosts the Buff and Blue past SJU in series finale
PHILADELPHIA - With three outs to go in the series finale against Saint Joseph's, GW trailed 4-3. Needing just one run to tie and two to take the lead, the Buff and Blue bats caught fire in the seventh inning and scored seven runs to take both Game Three and the series over the Hawks.
GW scored four runs in the seventh before making an out. After the first two batters of the inning reached safely, GW hit three-consecutive doubles and erased the one-run deficit while building a 7-4 lead.
The Hawks recorded two outs and looked to get out of the inning down three, but with the bases loaded, veteran third baseman Maggie Greco hit GW's fourth double of the inning and her second of the game, clearing the bases and adding another three runs to GW's lead.
The seventh-inning dramatics came after a hot start to the game for both offenses. The Buff and Blue loaded the bases at the start of the game and converted twice on a walk from Abby Schaub and a single from Alena Ramirez.
SJU didn't stay down for long and tied the game with two runs of its own in the first inning.
GW loaded the bases again in the third inning and scored once off a Daniella Wilson sac fly, but the Hawks once again tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, and one frame later took a 4-3 lead, which they brought into the seventh inning.
After GW's onslaught in the top of the seventh, SJU loaded the bases and managed to push one run across, but the damage had been done and GW walked away with a 10-5 victory.
Lily Hanafin picked up her first collegiate win, while GW set a new season-high in RBI (10) and tied season-highs in walks (7) and doubles (5). The Buff and Blue were also only one hit shy of its season-high in hits (11).
