Softball Drops Series Finale to Dayton, 8-3

Buff and Blue look ahead to Saint Joseph’s on Friday and Saturday
WASHINGTON - GW softball fell 8-3 in the series finale to Dayton on Sunday. The Buff and Blue will turn towards their next A-10 series, this Friday and Saturday at Saint Joseph's.Â
An early GW pitching change saw first-year Lily Hanafin take over pitching duties in the second inning. Hanafin brought GW to the finish line in the circle and allowed seven runs off nine hits but struck out six in the process. Flyers' ace Izzy Kemp pitched the first six innings for Dayton and earned the win.
Dayton struck first in the game, scoring twice in the second inning.
GW responded in the third inning after Daniella Wilson, who led off the inning with a triple into right-center field, scored on a hard-hit ball down the first base line from Arizona Ritchie.
GW then tied things up in the fifth inning after Gabby Polsky, who was pinch-hitting for Taylor Puig, singled into left field and scored Maggie Greco.
Dayton regained the lead with two runs in the next half-inning and put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with four more runs.
Reese Torres led-off the last of the seventh with a solo home run that was crushed to right-center field, but the damage had been done as Dayton walked away with an 8-3 win in the series finale.
UP NEXT
GW travels to Philadelphia next weekend to face conference foe Saint Joseph's on Friday and Saturday. First pitch in Friday's doubleheader is set for noon.Â
