Colonials and Ramblers meet for Game Three tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET
CHICAGO - GW softball fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Loyola Chicago. Sunday's series finale at the Loyola Softball Park has been moved up to 12 p.m. ET due to expected inclement weather in the Chicago area.
GW 0, LOYOLA 1
Rose Cano and Ramblers' starting pitcher Peyton Pepkowski went toe-to-toe in a true pitcher's duel in the first-ever meeting between Loyola Chicago and GW, but it was Pepkowski and the Ramblers that got the best of GW, 1-0.
Both starters went the distance and combined allowed just six hits in the contest. Cano struck out four while allowing four hits and two walks over six innings of work, while Pepkowski fanned eight while allowing two hits and no walks.
The game's only run came in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI triple from three-hole hitter Amelia Thomas, driving in Madison Ebling following her leadoff walk.
GW looked to tie or take the lead in the top of the seventh with a two-out double from Cano, but Pepkowski remained steady and shut the door on the Colonials' comeback attempt.
Arizona Ritchie and Cano picked up the hits for GW. Ritchie swiped a bag and extended her hit streak to four games, while Cano hit her fourth double of the season.
GW 2, LOYOLA 8
A five-run Ramblers' fourth inning boosted Loyola to an 8-2 win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Buff and Blue's offense was limited to four hits in the late afternoon game, all of which came in the sixth and seventh innings.
Reese Torres continued to show off her power at the plate, collecting both RBIs on a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Torres is now tied for the team lead in home runs with fellow first-year Ashley Corpuz.
Loyola scored once in the first, fifth and sixth innings, but the majority of its damage was done in the fourth. The Ramblers played small ball and scored on three consecutive singles in the fourth inning, while also adding a run on a wild pitch.
Corpuz hit her 13th double of the season and continues to creep closer to the GW all-time rookie doubles record (16).
