GW returns for game three against the Flyers tomorrow at noon
WASHINGTON - On an afternoon that saw game times delayed and a lightning delay in game two, GW softball dropped both games in Saturday's doubleheader to Dayton.Â
GW 0, Dayton 10
A big fourth inning and quality pitching backed the Flyers in game one as Dayton took down GW, 10-0, in five innings. Flyers' ace Izzy Kemp threw all five innings and allowed zero hits in the series opener.
The Flyers took the lead in the second inning behind a two-run home run and went on to add eight more runs in the fourth inning.Â
The Buff and Blue managed three baserunners in the contest but couldn't convert on any of their opportunities.
Three different Flyers tied for a game-high two RBI (Papavasiliou, Walter and Wong), and Kemp struck out nine in her five-inning, no-hit performance.Â
GW 3, Dayton 4
The Colonials collected runs in each of the first three innings but couldn't hold off the Flyers in game two and fell to Dayton, 4-3.
Rose Cano got things going for the Colonials on both the mound and at-bat. The first-year pitcher set down the Flyers in order to begin game two, then drove in a run in her first-inning at-bat on an RBI single into left field.Â
After a lightning delay following the completion of the first inning, the Buff and Blue plated another run off a Maggie Greco sac fly which came with the bases juiced in the bottom of the second inning.
GW scored its third run in the third inning after forcing a defensive mistake out of the Flyers. An Alena Ramirez single sent Reese Torres from first to third and eventually home after an error by the Flyers' third basemen.
GW saw its lead disappear in the top of the fifth inning as Dayton loaded the bases with no outs and converted three times before GW got out of the inning.
Dayton then scored the game-winner in the sixth inning off a GW throwing error.
