Colonials seventh-inning comeback attempt fell just short
WASHINGTON - GW softball fell to Georgetown, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials will return to the GW Softball Field this weekend for a three-game series against Dayton.
Rose Cano and Georgetown's starting pitcher, Brooke Plonka, were the stories of the afternoon. Cano pitched her 10th complete game of the season and let up one run off six hits while punching out four, while Plonka went six innings and allowed four hits while striking out 13.
The lone run to cross the plate this afternoon came in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout to the shortstop.
GW's best chance to score came in the seventh inning with Hoya relief pitcher Julia Parker on the mound. A lead-off walk from Alena Ramirez was followed by Gabby Polsky being hit by a pitch, and the bases were then loaded after Maggie Greco drew another free base. With two outs, Ashley Corpuz nearly sent the Hoyas packing after sending a ball just down the left-field line, but it went just foul. Georgetown then secured its 1-0 win after striking out the final batter.
The Buff and Blue return to the GW Softball Field this weekend with a visit from the Dayton Flyers. The Colonials and Flyers will go head-to-head in a doubleheader on Saturday (12 & 2 p.m.) and then will conclude the series with one game on Sunday (12 p.m.). Sunday's game will be steamed on ESPN+.
