Buff and Blue hit season-high four home runs in Game Two
ST. LOUIS - GW softball continued conference play on Saturday, and despite an eruption of power in game two, fell twice to Saint Louis.Â
GW 3, Saint Louis 11Â
A six-run third inning was the catalyst for the Billikens as they defeated GW, 11-3, in five innings in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Colonials got on the board first with two third-inning runs that both came with the bases-loaded. Sophomore Abby Schaub was credited with the first RBI after being hit by a pitch, then senior Valentina Perrone collected her first RBI of the season on an infield single.
A pair of three-run Billikens' home runs were costly for GW in the third inning, as Saint Louis jumped out to a 6-2 lead.
The Buff and Blue loaded the bases again in the fourth which produced one run. Schaub picked up her second RBI of the game and 16th of the season after walking with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.Â
Saint Louis answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs and clinched the win in the fifth after plating another three.
Arizona Ritchie and Sidney Torres tied for a game-high two hits, while Maggie Greco and Schaub each reached base three times.
GW 7, Saint Louis 8
The Buff and Blue's power was on display in a back-and-forth Game Two, but the Colonials found themselves on the wrong side of a 8-7 final score line after a Billikens' walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
After going down two runs in the first inning, the Colonials tied things up on one swing of Reese Torres's bat, as she hit her first collegiate home run and tied things up at two.
SLU retook the lead with two runs in the third inning, but another Colonials longball put GW back ahead. With two runners on in the fourth inning, S. Torres cracked her second home run of the year and gave GW a 5-4 lead.
Another pair of Billikens' runs in the fourth inning flipped the lead back to Saint Louis but they didn't keep GW down for long as back-to-back home runs in the fifth gave the Buff and Blue the lead. Greco led off the inning and evened up the score with GW's third home run of the game and her first of the season. Then after a SLU pitching change, Ashley Corpuz mashed her fourth home run of the year and gave GW a 7-6 lead, which it held until the bottom of the seventh.
The Billikens led off the seventh inning with a game-tying home run, and after loading the bases, clinched game two with a walk-off single.
