Softball Drops Series Finale to Rhode Island, 7-4

GW opens conference play at 1-2
WASHINGTON - It didn't take Rhode Island long to heat up on a chilly morning in the nation's capital, as the Rams put up five first-inning runs on its way to a 7-4 win over GW. The Buff and Blue fall to 1-2 in A-10 play and 10-9 overall.
Rhode Island came out swinging at the start of the game, and through a mixture of crafty baserunning, timely hitting and a GW error, the Rams put up five runs in the opening frame.
The Colonials spent the next three innings clawing back. Arizona Ritchie got things going in GW's first at-bat with an infield single. That was followed by an Ashley Corpuz walk. The two base runners eventually scored off RBIs from Rose Cano and Abby Schaub which cut the lead to three after an eventful first inning.
The Colonials continued to cut into the deficit in the second and third innings. Ritchie drove in Darbie Stancil on a RBI sac-fly in the second inning, and Maggie Greco scored Cano in the third inning which cut the Rams once-towering lead down to one.
Rhode Island responded with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, leaving the Colonials down three heading into the last of the seventh, but GW didn't go quietly.
After recording outs on the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, GW managed to load the bases, which brought the potential game-winning run to the plate. The comeback wasn't in the cards though as an infield pop-up squandered the comeback opportunity and ended the game.
The Colonials will now look ahead to next week, which features four games on the road. GW will visit Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday followed by a trip to Saint Louis for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.Â
