Series-deciding game three due up at noon tomorrow
WASHINGTON - GW softball kicked off conference play today, splitting a doubleheader against Rhode Island. The Rams won game one, 3-2, before GW took game two, 9-0, in six innings.Â
GW 2, Rhode Island 3
Rose Cano was back on the mound today for GW in the conference opener, and despite a great effort in the circle, the Colonials fell 3-2. Cano pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs off eight hits, six walks and three strikeouts.
The Buff and Blue struck first in the second inning with a Daniella Lew single into center field. Maggie Greco scored on the play for her sixth run of the campaign.Â
The lead didn't last long though as URI drew even in the top of the fourth on an RBI single.
GW jumped back out in the lead in the fifth inning thanks to an Abby Schaub double. Schaub, who hit cleanup for GW today, collected her third double and ninth RBI of the year on the play.Â
URI tied the game again in the sixth inning and scored what went on to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning.Â
GW 9, Rhode Island 0 (6 Innings)
Game two had a much different look to it, as GW hopped out to an early lead and never looked back in the 9-0 win. Emma Fales picked up her first win of the season in her dominant complete-game shutout performance.Â
In the first inning, Schaub collected her first of three RBI in the game on a single into left-center field. Schaub came in to score on the next at-bat by way of a Reese Torres triple into left-center field that nearly cleared the fence.
GW kept its 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, when Schaub collected her second and third RBI of the game with a single into right field. Two batters later, Greco drove in another two runs with a triple into right field.
The Buff and Blue went into the sixth inning up 6-0 and needed two more runs to enact the run rule. Sidney Torres scored the first of three eventual runs in the inning on a sac-fly, which set the table for Ashley Corpuz to deliver the game-ending hit. Corpuz, who already has one walk-off home run this season, smashed a two-run home run over the left-field fence to secure the run-rule win for the Colonials. The home run was the first hit at the GW Softball Field this season.Â
