Cano earns third career win in as many starts
COLUMBIA, S.C. -Â Back in the old stomping grounds of South Carolina alum and current GW Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker, the Buff and Blue rode the arm of first-year hurler Rose Cano to its third win of the young campaign, all of which with the Long Beach, Calif., native earning the win.Â
Cano scattered just five hits in her complete game, fanning five while walking three and allowing just two runs with one unearned. In her third career start, also hitting out of the two-hole, the game ended with her team as the victors just as in her previous two starts in a perfect start to her career.
While Cano didn't need much offense to back her, grad student Arizona Ritchie was glad to be the spark at the top of the lineup. The Virginia product was 2-for-4 at the plate, including a double, scored twice and swiped a base.
The teams traded runs in the first, with ETSU - playing as the visitors in this game in the Carolina Classic - getting an unearned run off Cano, before GW knotted the ballgame at 1-1 when Ritchie came around to score on a muffed throw. ETSU regained the lead in the top of third, only to see Cano buckle down and hold them scoreless for the remainder of the game. Abby Schaub plated first-year Reese Torres with the tying run in the fourth on a sac fly, then Cano helped her own cause with the go-ahead RBI on a sac fly of her own to score Maggie Greco in the fifth. Mia Parker followed with GW's third sacrifice fly of the game to provide some insurance, bringing home Ritchie again to account for the 4-2 margin.
Ritchie had two of her team's six hits, while Torres found her way on via the walk twice, going for 1-for-1 at the plate plus the run scored.Â
Cano did a good job keeping the ball on the ground, getting six ground ball outs from her infield.
GDUB puts its 3-1 record on the line tomorrow in a pair of games in Columbia. First an emotional clash for Schoonmaker comes at 3pm against her old Gamecocks on SEC Network+, followed by a meeting with Western Kentucky at 5:30.
