Buff and Blue finish Carolina Classic tomorrow against Delaware
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Looking to keep the momentum going from a winning first day at the Carolina Classic, GW softball faced a strong pair of foes in doubleheader action, first from the SEC in South Carolina then against Western Kentucky, who advanced to the Conference USA Championship game a season ago. It did not go the way of the Buff and Blue in either contest though, as George Washington fell, 7-1 and 8-0.
South Carolina took a 6-0 lead after three innings, doing so however with the benefit of just one extra base hit. The Gamecocks played station-to-station softball, with six hits (five singles), six walks and five stolen bases. Lily Hanafin was a relative bright spot for GW in the circle, tossing 3.1 innings while only allowing one unearned run and giving up just one hit. At the plate, Arizona Ritchie continued her scorching start to the season, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the top of the seventh when cleanup hitter Ashley Corpuz drove her home with a single to right. It was too-little, too-late in front of an announced crowd of 1,654 fans on hand to see their hometown team.
Hoping to regroup in the second game of the day against Western Kentucky, GW couldn't recover. First-year pitcher Rose Cano, the victor in yesterday's contest, put her 3-0 record on the line and held the Hilltoppers scoreless through two innings. WKU got to her in the third and plated three runs in the frame with the first blow being a two-run double. Western Kentucky went on to score four in the fourth and one in the fifth to end the game early, 8-0. GW scratched out two hits and drew three walks, but the Hilltoppers' Katie Gardner stranded them. Corpuz cracked a double, while Reese Torres had the other hit.
GDUB closes its time in South Carolina on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. against Delaware, looking to bring home a 2-2 record in the Classic before next weekend's tournament at UVA.
