Both of GW’s remaining games at Upstate Classic canceled due to inclement weather
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - GW softball put a bow on the Upstate Classic on Saturday morning, defeating Maine, 9-4. The Colonials' remaining games at the Upstate Classic, including Saturday afternoon's game against USC Upstate and Sunday morning's rematch against Bucknell, were canceled due to inclement weather in the area.Â
GW 9, Maine 4:Â
A day after dropping a tight 3-2 game against Maine, GW softball got another opportunity to take down the Black Bears and left nothing to chance. The Buff and Blue jumped all over Maine, winning 9-4, and moved to 2-1 on the season.
Rose Cano had a standout performance against Maine. Along with earning her second-career start and second-career win, Cano recorded three hits and scored her first collegiate run. In the circle, she went four innings and allowed three hits, one run and had five strikeouts.Â
Maine's only run versus Cano came on an early opportunity with the bases loaded and only one out in the first inning. A Maine fly-out advanced all runners and scored one run, but that didn't phase Cano, who struck out the final batter of the inning and limited Maine's early bases-loaded opportunity to one run.
GW wouldn't be down for long. The Colonials bounced back in the top of the second inning and took a 2-1 lead, thanks in-part to the Torres sisters. Playing in just their third collegiate game together, Sidney Torres scored younger sister Reese Torres with an RBI sac-fly, which kick-started GW's high offense output. The Colonials secured one more run in the inning, nabbing a run on a double steal with runners on first and third.
The third inning was when GW started to gain separation. With the bases juiced, R. Torres singled and drove in two runs, leaving herself and fellow first-year Ashley Cropuz on base. That's when Abby Schaub delivered the biggest swing of the day. Schaub blasted a three-run homerun over the center field fence, widening GW's lead to six.
The Colonials were in control from that point on. Mia Parker and Daniella Lew extended GW's lead further in the sixth inning with a pair of RBI singles, after which the Colonials led 9-1.
A sixth-inning run for the Black Bears prevented the eight-run rule, and Maine scored twice more in the seventh inning, but the result was never in doubt and GW claimed its second win of the season.

-
Reese Torres and Daniella Lew recorded their first collegiate hitsÂ
-
Abby Schaub hit her first collegiate home run

GW recorded season-highs of nine runs and 12 hits
Up Next:Â
