Women’s Basketball Opens A-10 Play with Richmond

WASHINGTON – Following an eight-day holiday break, the George Washington women's basketball team returns to the Smith Center to open A-10 play on Saturday against Richmond. The contests tips-off 18-straight conference matchups for GW, taking them all the way to the A-10 Tournament in early March. Tip-off for Saturday's matchup with the Spiders is set for 12 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+ and Monumental Sports Network.
LAST TIME OUT
Last Thursday, GW moved its winning streak to three games with a dominant 67-34 victory over Stonehill inside the Smith Center. The win moved GDUB to 7-5 on the season and concluded the team's non-conference slate. Grad student Essence Brown led the way with a standout performance, putting in a career-best 25 points on 8-16 shooting from the field. Brown also dished out a career-high four assists and pulled down six rebounds. Brown was efficient all day, hitting on 4-9 shots from 3-point range and 5-8 from the free-throw line. The matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs, giving GW the early edge in the all-time series.
Also playing well for the Buff & Blue was junior Maxine Engel, who tallied nine points, all of which came via 3-pointers. Engel connected on 3-4 from downtown in 15 minutes of action. Senior Asjah Innis added eight points and eight rebounds, while grad student Maren Durant was a force in the paint, finishing with seven points and eight boards.
LOCK-DOWN DEFENSE
In Thursday's win over Stonehill, GW held the Skyhawks to single-digit scoring in three of the game's four quarters. GW has now held opponents to single-digit scoring in 16 quarters this season, the equivalent of four total games. GW is second in the A-10 in points allowed per game, holding opponents to 50.9 points per contest, just 1.6 points behind VCU, who has the top-rated defense in the conference with just 49.3 points allowed per game.
PERFECT AT HOME
GW is now 6-0 at home this season following Thursday's victory of Stonehill. The last time GW started a season 6-0 at home was 2006-07. That squad finished 13-0 in Foggy Bottom and tallied an overall record of 28-4 on the year. The 2006-07 team went 14-0 in conference play during the regular season and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament, eventually falling to #1 overall seed North Carolina. GW holds a dominant 483-177 (.732) record at home all-time, putting the program on pace to potentially eclipse 500 wins at home next season.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
Richmond enters Saturday's contest 10-3 overall after finishing 1-1 at the Cherokee Invitational last week. The Spiders fell to Michigan State in a narrow 83-76 contest, then rebounded for a clutch 64-60 win over Chattanooga.
GW holds a 27-17 record over Richmond all-time dating back to the first matchup in 1982. Despite trailing in the all-time series, Richmond has been dominant over GW in recent years, winning seven of the last nine meetings over the Revolutionaries. GW defeated Richmond last season in the lone matchup between the two schools, escaping with a 65-63 victory. GW will play Richmond again later this season as well, traveling to the Robins Center on Feb. 11.
The Spiders are led by head coach Aaron Roussell who's in his fifth season with Richmond. Rousell holds 19 years of head coaching experience overall and boasts a career record of 377-173. As head coach of Richmond, Rousell holds a record of 75-54 and has led the program to three-straight winning seasons. On the court, Richmond is led by Maggie Doogan who averages 17.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Doogan also hits on a team-best 55.6% from the field and connects on 85.6% of her free throws. Addie Budnik averages 11.5 points, 4.7 boards and 2.8 assists for the Spiders, while Rachel Ullstrom adds 11.1 points per contest. Richmond's backcourt is also held down by Grace Townsend who puts in 10.5 points and dishes out a team-high 4.8 assists per game.
