NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -Â Fresh off a 2-1 week in the Bahamas, GW men's basketball was recognized with a pair of weekly honors by the Atlantic 10 on Monday. James Bishop IV was named the A-10 Player of the Week and Darren Buchanan Jr. was tabbed as the league's Rookie of the Week.
GW has won four of the six weekly awards given out by the conference through the season's first three weeks while off to the program's best start (6-1) since the 2015-16 season.
Bishop earns the weekly accolade for the third time in his career following an All-Tournament performance at the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship. The senior guard tallied a trio of 20-point games and tied the tournament record with 78 points, averaging 26.0 per game.Â
Bishop notched a pair of 28-point performances, including an efficient 10-of-16 showing in GW's comeback victory against Delaware on Sunday. He shot 51% (28-of-55) from the floor and 35% (6-of-17) from beyond the arc while also dishing out five assists per game.
Through the season's first seven contests, Bishop is in his customary spot atop the A-10 leaderboard with 20.9 ppg while also leading the conference with 5.1 assists per contest.Â
Buchanan continues GW's stranglehold on Rookie of the Week honors, joining two-time winner Garrett Johnson with the distinction. The native Washingtonian averaged 17.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg and shot 66.7% (18-of-27) from the floor during the Bahamas trip.
He willed the Buff & Blue to a double overtime victory on Friday night with a 25-point performance on 9-of-12 shooting, tossing in six rebounds and two assists. He followed up with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals on Saturday vs. UIC before earning his first start on Sunday vs. Ohio and chipping in 13 points and eight rebounds.
Buchanan has reached double figures in six consecutive games and is second among league first-years in scoring at 13.4 ppg and third in rebounds with 5.4 per contest.Â
GW will look to remain hot when it travels for its lone true road non-conference game on Friday night at South Carolina. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
