BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) released its all-conference awards on Friday, naming GW senior Viktor Jovanovic to the All-MAWPC First Team, and senior Luca Castorina and graduate student Mateus Stellet to the All-MAWPC Second Team.
Jovanovic becomes the eighth member of GW water polo to be selected to the All-MAWPC First Team. Jovanovic adds the selection to his already stacked resume of MAWPC major awards, which includes All-MAWPC Second Team selections in the 2020-21 and 2021 seasons, along with a MAWPC Championship All-Tournament First Team selection in 2021. Jovanovic, who was named to the Cutino Award Watch List as one of the top 20 student-athletes in NCAA men's water polo, led the Revolutionaries with 69 goals, 18 steals and eight field blocks in its 24 regular season games. The Calgary, Canada native also finished second on GW with 86 points and 42 exclusions drawn, and third on the team in assists with 17.
Castorina picked up an All-MAWPC Second Team selection after another complete season as GW's workhorse goalkeeper. The selection marks the third season in a row that Castorina has been named to the All-MAWPC Second Team, which he adds to his resume along with his MAWPC Championship All-Tournament First Team selection in 2021. Castorina played every minute of all 24 games in goal for GW, racking up 279 saves with a 48.86 save percentage, forcing 15 steals and dishing out eight assists. Notably, Castorina also scored his first collegiate goal this season on a full-pool shot against Loyola Marymount.
Stellet was selected to the All-MAWPC Second Team and earned his first major award in his second season after transferring from Cal. Stellet brought issues for opposing teams in his graduate season. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native forced a GW-best 59 ejections drawn and finished third on the team with 74 points via 54 goals and 20 assists. Stellet also finished second on the squad with six field blocks and tied for second with 16 steals.
GW puts its season on the line tonight in the quarterfinal round of the MAWPC Championship tournament. The 5th-ranked Revolutionaries will battle the 4th-ranked Seahawks from Wagner at 7:30 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa., with coverage available for purchase on CWPATV.com.
