WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's and women's swimming and diving teams are getting set for their third meet of the season, a dual meet against Navy on Saturday morning in Annapolis, Md. The meet, hosted at Lejeune Hall, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
RUTGERS INVITE REWIND
After a last-minute change to the schedule, the Buff and Blue did well at the Rutgers Invite on October 6-7. GW won four events and had high finishes all-around competing against quality competition.
The Revolutionaries completed two podium sweeps, one each by the men and women. The Buff and Blue women took the top-three spots in the 400-yard IM, thanks to fast swims from Molly Smyers (4:30.26), Julia Knox (4:30.93) and Zoe Schneider (4:30.94), while GW's men finished with the four fastest times in the 100-yard butterfly, via impressive performances by Djurdje Matic (47.69), Daniel Nagy (49.19), Dylan Koo (50.48) and Ethan Tulenko (50.69).
Matic, not satisfied with just one race win, came out and blazed through the 100-yard backstroke (49.40), picking up his second win of the invitational.
First-year diver Ben Bradley submitted the high-finish of the weekend for GW's divers as he won his first collegiate event with a 281.80 score on the men's 3m board.
MATIC MADNESS
Matic, an NCAA qualifier in 2022, was chosen as the A-10 Performer of the Week following the Rutgers Invitational. Not only did Matic win the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke, he also finished second in the 50-yard free (20.65) and contributed to four podium finishes in the relays, including second place in both the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:23.23) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:03.45), second place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:30.74) and third place in the 400-yard medley relay (3:20.80).
FROM THE DESK OF COACH THOMAS
"Navy presents another good opportunity for us to get eyes on some of the work that we've been doing over the last few weeks," said Head Coach Brian Thomas. "I like the way that our schedule has produced opportunities to race every couple of weeks. Especially interested to see how our teams perform up at Navy. We typically hit them right in the middle of a training cycle, so our crew is hurting a little bit, and that's especially the case in late October any year, so I'm interested to see if we can rise to the occasion."
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Navy has competed just once this year, when it lost in a dual meet at Penn State (M: 192.5-107.5; W: 104-196), however the Midshipmen are competing at UMBC on Friday afternoon ahead of Saturday morning's meet with the Revolutionaries.
Navy is coming off a sweep of the Patriot League Championships last season, in which Navy's women ran away with the team's 11th-straight Patriot League Championship, and its men clinched victory in the final race of the meet to win its 19th-overall Patriot League Championship, beating Army by 10 points.
Navy returns 62 letterwinners from last year's squads, including 22 of last year's 24 All-Patriot League honorees.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR FANS PLANNING TO ATTEND
From Navy Athletics: "Fans will not be allowed to drive onto the USNA. They will need to park downtown and walk over. A photo ID is needed for everyone 18 and older and those 17 and younger must be with an adult."
LOOKING AHEAD
GW's next meet comes on Saturday, Nov. 4, when the Buff and Blue travel to Pittsburgh for a dual meet against Pitt.
