Colonials win third-straight game, rise to third in A-10 standings
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball scored the final four points in overtime and got the one final stop it needed to earn its third consecutive victory, topping Saint Joseph's, 92-91, Wednesday at the Smith Center.
After seeing a five-point lead in the final 30 seconds of regulation disappear, GW turned the tables on the Hawks in the first OT game of the campaign. The Buff & Blue trailed by three with 50 seconds left, but turned to the nation's #6 scorer, James Bishop IV, to stir the comeback.
Bishop hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one with 37 seconds left, and after a St. Joe's miss at the free throw line, it was the senior who delivered the dagger with an off-balance driving layup that kissed off the glass with 20 seconds remaining.
The Colonials got a stop via a basket interference call, but turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds giving the Hawks one last chance. GW forced a tough 3-point attempt from Rasheer Fleming that clanged off the iron to open up the escape hatch for the Buff & Blue.
The win gave the Colonials their first three-game winning streak since Feb. 2018, and at 5-2 in A-10 play, their best start to the conference season since 2014-15.
Bishop was the finisher, scoring eight of his 22 points in the extra session to catalyze the Colonial attack. But the star of the night was Brendan Adams, who erupted for a career-high 32 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Adams knocked down 7-of-12 from beyond the arc, coming within one of tying the program's all-time record.
Maximus Edwards registered a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, snagging the final board of the game to accomplish the feat. Ricky Lindo Jr., was a team-high +14 in 27 minutes, posting 11 points and seven rebounds.
GW hit 11 3-pointers in the game to St. Joe's 10 and won despite the Hawks shooting 47% from the floor to GW's 42%. The difference came at the charity stripe where the Buff & Blue knocked down 27-of-35 compared to SJU's 9-of-17 showing.
Lynn Greer III nearly willed the visitors to a win with 31 points and 11 rebounds of his own. Erik Reynolds II added 17 and Kacper Klaczek had 16 for the Hawks, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
GW will now hit the road for its next two contests, starting with a visit to Fordham on Saturday afternoon. Tip from Rose Hill Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
